How to Find the Best Diet Pills for Weight Loss

Washington, DC (Oct 31) -- Diet pills can be a real hit or miss proposition. Which ones have been clinically tested and shown to suppress appetite, or alter metabolism, or otherwise help people lose weight? Which ones actually work in the real world? Which diet pills are the right ones for me? Here's how to find out.

Head to a site called ConsumerSearch.com and visit their page for Diet Pill Reviews.  ConsumerSearch is an excellent resource that basically 'reviews the reviews'. I think it is, hands down, the best what-and-where-to-buy site out there. They cull through articles from Consumer Reports, industry magazines, professional journals, news media, and a host of other sources. Then they summarize the reviews in an easy to understand way, and identify the options that are the most highly recommended by the most reviewers.

When this eHow was written, ConsumerSearch gave top ratings to DEX-L10 Hoodia Gordonii Natural Appetite Suppressant, Lean System 7, and the prescription pill, Phentermine...full text

How to Talk to Anybody About Anything

Minneapolis (Oct 28) -- Whether walking into a room filled with strangers or dealing with a difficult relative, it's not impossible to connect with anyone -- the key is learning the secrets of creating those connections.

In her new book, "Jill Spiegel's How To Talk To Anyone About Anything! The Secrets to Connecting," ( http://www.JillSpiegel.com) Spiegel explains that Holiday parties help to celebrate connections with new and familiar faces. "There are simple, effective ways to create meaningful conversations and inspire confidence in yourself and others," says Spiegel.

Spiegel shares:

* The top three qualities that instantly connect you with others are your warmth, genuineness and empathy. "There is a myth that when we first meet people, we need to be clever and witty. But the truth is it's your positive energy and friendliness that draw people to you," Spiegel explains.

* When you see a group of people talking, you become part of that group with one simple question. Ask, 'Mind if I join?' Or 'Got room for one more?' "People want to welcome you in," says Spiegel....full text

How to upgrade your windows and save on energy

Dallas (Oct 27) -- Your window on the world could be your ticket to an extreme electric bill.

The Environmental Protection Agency says energy-efficient windows could slash household energy costs by up to 15 percent.

For the last several years in Dallas, code has required low-E windows for all new construction. According to Jim Benney, executive director of the nonprofit National Fenestration Rating Council, low-E (which stands for low emission) windows were first introduced in the 1980s as a way to retain heat in cold climates. A microscopic metallic film, invisible to the naked eye, enables the glass to keep cool air inside and warm air outside, and vice versa.

"With a clear piece of glass, 89 percent of the heat hitting it comes inside the house," says Mr. Benney. "With low-E, it's only 4 percent, which makes a big difference." ...full text

How to Find a Job When You Are Unemployed

Washington, DC (Oct 19) -- Getting fired or otherwise losing a job, especially one you thought would be there for you, is a demoralizing and painful experience. Don't let the hurt paralyze you though. Finding a new job takes focus and effort. Here are some steps to take.

***Join a Network***

Find a group of folks with similar experiences to yours to share ideas, trade job leads, help with resumes, or simply listen to each others problems and help boost morale. This can be an online network, a group in your community, or a network formed by a union, church, human resources department from your old job, or local government.

.
***Fill Up That Rolodex***

Use your network, along with friends, family, colleagues, community acquaintances, to find out who-knows-who. Build up lists of names of people to contact, along with their phone numbers, and what their job is...and don't forget to include who referred you ("Hi. My name is David Sarokin. Joe the Plumber suggested I give you a call.")....full article

How to Obtain Your Free Medical History Report

Washington, DC (Oct 17) -- Did you know that there is a company called MIB that compiles medical history reports, just like there are companies that put together credit history reports? You are legally entitled to a free copy of your medical history report. Here's how to get it.

Medical history reports are not as common as credit reports. About 20% of the US population has a medical history report on file.  You probably have a medical history report if, in the past seven years, you have applied as an individual (not as part of a group) for any of the following:

*life insurance
*health insurance
*disability income insurance ....full report

How To Buy Bonds as an Investment

Washington DC (Oct 9) -- With the stock market on a wild ride, many investors are pulling their money out of stocks, and looking for a safer port of call. Perhaps you should give bonds some consideration. Here's how to get started.

Get familiar with bonds. A bond is essentially a loan -- you are lending your money to someone who needs it (sometimes the government, sometimes a corporation), and they, in turn, promise to pay you back, with interest, at some agreed-upon date. See Resources, below, for more background on bonds.

Learn about risk and returns. Bonds are generally considered safer than stocks during volatile market conditions. But even bonds have different levels of risk. Bonds issued by the US government (Savings Bonds, T-Bills, treasury notes, etc) are the safest of all, but also provide fairly low returns. Municipal bonds are a bit riskier, with larger payouts, and also can have sizable tax advantages. Corporate bonds carry the most risk, but also tend to pay the highest rates of interest. See Resources, below, for more information on the different types of bonds, and the risks and rewards they carry....full article

How to Fix a Stuck Pixel on an LCD Monitor

Boston (Oct 9) -- If your LCD screen has a stuck or dead pixel (a point on the screen that is always lit or always dark), it is usually due to a transistor malfunction or uneven distribution of liquid in the liquid crystal display (TFT LCD). This can often be fixed.

Steps

Software Method
  1. Try running pixel fixing software (see Sources and Citations). Stuck pixels can often be re-energized by rapidly turning them on and off. If this fails, complete the following steps.
Pressure Method
  1. Turn off your computer's monitor.
  2. Get yourself a damp washcloth, so that you don't scratch your screen.
  3. Take a household pen, pencil, screwdriver, or some other sort of instrument with a focused, but relatively dull, point. A very good tool would be a PDA stylus.
  4. Fold the washcloth to make sure you don't accidentally puncture it and scratch the screen.
  5. Apply pressure through the folded washcloth with the instrument to exactly where the stuck pixel is. Try not to put pressure anywhere else, as this may make more stuck pixels.
  6. While applying pressure, turn on your computer and screen.
  7. Remove pressure and the stuck pixel should be gone. This works as the liquid in the liquid crystal has not spread into each little pixel. This liquid is used with the backlight on your monitor, allowing different amounts of light through, which creates the different colors....full article

How to Keep Children Safe Around Exotic Pets

Washington DC (Oct 7) -- I'm the last one to discourage kids from having pets. But more and more evidence is building up that exposure to non-traditional or exotic pets can lead to disease, especially in young children. Here's how to play it safe with kids and exotic pets.

***Background***

More and more households are turning animals other than cats and dogs as pets. Examples include lizards, hamsters, prairie dogs, hedgehogs, chicks, turtles, and many others.

As cute and as interesting as they may be, exotic pets and young kids can be the wrong mix.

***Avoid Disease***

Exotic pets can carry unusual diseases. Young children have immature immune systems, no sanitary habits to speak of, and cannot handle pets with the sophistication of an older child, so are more susceptible to germs, bites and scratches.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently issued a policy that discourages families from owning nontraditional pets....full article

How to Lower Costs, Save Money at Home During Hard Times

Washington, DC --

The economy is in rough shape, and things may be getting even tougher. There are a lot of steps you can take at home and around the house to reduce costs, have more cash on hand, and hopefully ease up your own personal financial situation. Here's how.

1.  Get a Netflix of Blockbuster account. That's right! Subscribing to a service can sometimes save money. Instead of taking the family to the movies (at what?, about $50-75 a visit!), save money by watching movies at home. Netflix's basic service is only a few dollars a month.

2.  Throw a party. We need entertainment, and we need to socialize. But why go out dining with your friends, and spend hundreds of dollars? Have a get-together at home, make it a pot luck, and watch one of the Netflix movies I mentioned a moment ago...full article

How To Ride Out the Financial Storm

Washington DC -- Two weeks of market upheaval and political tension have left many investors confused. Here are answers to pressing questions about the current financial turmoil.

Q So what should I be doing now?

A bear market is always a good time to take a hard look at your portfolio and gauge how much risk you can stand. From their peak last Oct. 9, U.S. stocks, as measured by the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index, have dropped by more than 20 percent. (Many individual stocks have, of course, dropped far more.) If a decline of that magnitude doesn't faze you, stick with your plan. If it leaves you queasy, you probably need to trim your allotment to stocks and add to your bond and cash holdings....full article

How to Procrastinate ... And Still Get Things Done

Washington DC -- The art of 'structured procrastination' may sound nonsensical, but it can help you not do all the things you're supposed to be doing, while still getting them done. Here's how structured procrastination works.

A Bit Of Background On Successful Procrastination:  Everybody seems to have a bit of that "Why put off until tomorrow what I can postpone at least until next week" inside them. Some more than others.  John Perry, a philosophy professor at Stanford University, is such a hopeless chronic procrastinator, and such a hopeless chronic academic, that he formalized the art of what he calls "structured procrastination". It's getting quite a bit of attention. ...full article
